Wednesday 11th March – Hike (snow shoe)*****sunny
La Chevrerie (1100m to Col du Chavan 1757)

Leisurely start and exercises and we saw two dippers in the river down the bank from the van:) Then we walked with our snow shoes up to the Col du Chavan. The walk had been recommended by the man in the ski shop the other day and it was probably even tougher and more vertical than the Rocher de La Motte on Sunday! It started off where the huskies are at the end of the car park and made its way on a relatively flat path to the Plan des Rosses where it looks like the huskies do their circuit. Then the path rose very steeply up through a forest with the river running down at intervals. It was a good path and as we are finding more and more, the touring skiers love it and this seemed even more extreme than before as it was quite icy snow with dense trees to avoid! How they walk up on skis is unbelievable as you really can’t explain how steep this path really is. We reached the chalet de Chavan Refuge where a caterpillar buggy was parked and people were sitting round a big table. We carried on determined to get to the view point at the Col de Chavan. Had a nice chat with a young guy who was a mountain guide still up there walking on his day off! The slope to the top was ridiculously steep but we did it and sat on a rock to eat our lunch. It took us three hours to get up there and we watched two crazy skiers walking up even higher to the Haute Pointe! The view down into the valley was of the ski resort Sommand and on the horizon the ever present Mont Blanc – in cloud even though it is an amazingly sunny day! Two old boys arrived the same way as us and were walking down to Sommand! We walked up a rather scary bit to follow in the footsteps of the guide guy and walked right down a huge snowy field from the top making our own tracks and making quite a short cut:) As we got to the chalet a group of pensioners looking absolutely exhausted arrived and we hoped they were staying the night at the refuge as they didn’t look like they would get down before dark! We carried on down to the van at La Chevriere ski station – a drop of 657m in all – taking 2 ½ hours making a total of 6 hours walking and 7.3 miles. We were shattered but again had great fun and really enjoyed it – the scenery is indescribably beautiful. As we got back to the car park a group of lads were putting their skis and touring snow boards on and walking up the mountain with head torches – bonkers!! We did see them come down again about 8.30 in the dark so mission accomplished for them!!
